Artist statement

Bahador Fatemi

My journey as an artist is evolving into a deeper exploration of visual storytelling. Caught between the binaries of yesterday and tomorrow, male and female, rich and poor, West and East, my work brings this in-between space onto the stage. It’s a moment of silence, a suspension—reflecting the liminal space I navigate. Through composition, form, and color, I examine the separations in gender, race, and power structures, shaping narratives that expose societal divisions.

My paintings question justice, the credibility of those who judge, and the nature of their judgments. I investigate how systems of power either unite or oppose, creating and sustaining separations. My canvases resemble theatrical scenes—frozen moments of tension, where expressive figures embody extremity, discomfort, and identity in flux. Contrast drives my work, emerging through concept, color, subject matter, and composition. This visual language of conflict and duality is central to my artistic expression, revealing the interplay between societal forces and the human experience within them.
